Gazakh (also spelled Kazakh) is a special type of administrative area in Azerbaijan. It's like a district or region. Gazakh is known for having two small parts of its land, called exclaves, located inside the neighboring country of Armenia. These two exclaves are named Yukhari Askipara and Barkhudarli.
During a past conflict, the Nagorno-Karabakh War, these two exclaves came under the control of Armenia. This means they are part of Gazakh, but you have to travel through another country to reach them.

Understanding Gazakh's Location
Gazakh is located in the western part of Azerbaijan. It shares borders with Armenia and Georgia. The total area of Gazakh is about 700 square kilometers. This is roughly the size of a medium-sized city.
What is a Raion?
In Azerbaijan, a raion is a type of administrative division. It's similar to a county or a district in other countries. Each raion has its own local government. The leader of Gazakh is called the executive head.
What are Exclaves?
An exclave is a piece of land that belongs to one country or region but is completely surrounded by the territory of another country or region. Think of it like an island of land. Gazakh has two such exclaves, Yukhari Askipara and Barkhudarli, which are surrounded by Armenia.
The Nagorno-Karabakh War and Exclaves
The Nagorno-Karabakh War was a conflict that took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this time, the two exclaves of Gazakh became occupied. This means they are no longer under Azerbaijan's control, even though they are officially part of Gazakh. This situation makes Gazakh's geography quite unique.
People and Life in Gazakh
As of 2010, about 91,500 people lived in Gazakh. The people living here are mostly Azerbaijanis. They speak the Azerbaijani language. The region has a rich history and culture. Many people work in agriculture, growing crops and raising animals.
Local Government and Services
