Qazi Muhammad (1893-1947) was an important Kurdish leader. He deeply loved his people and wanted them to have their own country. He was also a religious leader. He became the president of the Republic of Mahabad, a short-lived Kurdish state in Iran in 1946. This was the second modern Kurdish state in the Middle East.

Qazi Muhammad also started the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran. Sadly, the Kurdish movement he helped create was stopped by the Iranian government. He was put to death in Mahabad on March 30, 1947. Mustafa Barzani, another famous Kurdish leader, was a defense minister in Qazi Muhammad's government. One of Qazi Muhammad's sons, Ali Qazi, is still active in the Kurdish movement today.

Who Was Qazi Muhammad?

Qazi Muhammad was born on May 1, 1893, in Mahabad, a city in Kurdistan. He grew up to become a lawyer. He was known for his strong belief in the rights of the Kurdish people. He dreamed of a time when Kurds would have their own independent country.

Leading the Republic of Mahabad

In 1946, Qazi Muhammad became the president of the Republic of Mahabad. This new country was in the Kurdish part of Iran and was supported by Russia at the time. It was a big step for the Kurdish people, as it was only the second time they had their own state. The Republic of Mahabad lasted for about eleven months.

His Legacy and Impact

Qazi Muhammad worked hard to build the new republic. He wanted to create a fair and independent country for Kurds. However, the Iranian government did not agree with this new state. In December 1946, the Iranian army took back control of Mahabad. Qazi Muhammad was arrested and, sadly, executed on March 30, 1947.

Even though the Republic of Mahabad was short-lived, Qazi Muhammad is still seen as a hero by many Kurds. He is remembered for his courage and his efforts to create a better future for his people. His work inspired many other Kurdish leaders and movements that followed.
