The Republic of Mahabad was a short-lived Kurdish state. It was also known as the Republic of Kurdistan. This state was formed in an area of Iran where many Kurdish people live. Its capital city was Mahabad in northwestern Iran.
The Republic of Mahabad was the second independent Kurdish state in the 1900s. The first was the Republic of Ararat in Turkey. The Mahabad Republic was part of a bigger problem called the Iran crisis. This was a time of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The republic was led by President Qazi Muhammad. Mustafa Barzani was the Minister of Defense. The Prime Minister was Haji Baba Sheikh. The Republic of Mahabad declared its independence on January 22, 1946. However, the Iranian army took control of the area less than a year later.
After the republic ended in 1947, Qazi Muhammad was publicly executed. This happened in Chuwarchira Square in the center of Mahabad.

Why Was the Republic of Mahabad Formed?
The Republic of Mahabad was formed during a special time. World War II had just ended. The Soviet Union had troops in northern Iran. This created a chance for Kurdish leaders to declare their own state.
The Role of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union supported the idea of an independent Kurdish state. They helped the leaders of Mahabad. An American named Archibald Roosevelt wrote about this. He said the Kurds needed the Soviet Union's help to succeed.
However, this close link to the Soviet Union also caused problems. Many Kurdish tribes did not agree with this alliance. They did not support the new Kurdish state because of it.
End of the Republic
The Soviet Union removed its troops from Iran in June 1946. This left the Republic of Mahabad without its main supporter. The Iranian army quickly moved in. They took back control of Mahabad by December 1946.
