Early Life and Education
Qemal Stafa was born in Elbasan, Albania, in 1920. His family was from a village called Zabzun. His father, Hasan, was in the military. In 1923, his family moved to Shkodër.
School Days
Qemal first studied in Shkodër at the Saverian College. Later, due to new education rules, he moved to a public high school in Shkodër. After his father passed away in 1936, his family moved to Tirana. There, he continued his studies at the Tirana Lyceum. This school was later renamed Qemal Stafa High School in his honor.
Early Activism
Qemal Stafa was one of the people who started the Communist Group of Shkodër. This group was one of three that joined together in 1941. They formed what became the Communist Party of Albania.
In February 1939, a special court met in Tirana. It looked into 73 people suspected of communist activities. Qemal Stafa was arrested on January 24. Because of his young age, he was sentenced to three years in prison. He accepted all the accusations against him.
Release from Prison
On April 7, 1939, Italy invaded Albania. During the chaos of the invasion, Qemal Stafa was released from jail. After his release, he spent some time in Florence, Italy. He studied law there with a scholarship from the Albanian government.
Role in the Communist Party
Qemal Stafa was a key person in starting the Albanian Communist Party. This happened in Tirana on November 8, 1941. He was a founding member of this important political group.
Death and Legacy
Qemal Stafa was killed on the outskirts of Tirana. This happened on May 5, 1942. He was killed by the Italian fascist forces. These forces had occupied Albania at the time.
The date of his death, May 5, became a special day. After World War II, it was chosen as Martyrs' Day of Albania. This day remembers all the people who gave their lives for Albania's freedom.
Many places in Albania are named after Qemal Stafa. These include streets, squares, and schools. A military base also bears his name. Albania's former national football stadium, the Qemal Stafa Stadium, was named after him. The main stand in the current national stadium, Arena Kombëtare, also carries his name.
