Québec debout (which means Quebec Standing Up or Quebec Stand Up) was a special group of politicians from Quebec. It used to be called the Groupe parlementaire québécois (which means Quebec Parliamentary Group). This group was part of the House of Commons of Canada, which is where Canada's main laws are made. At one point, they were planning to become a full political party. Rhéal Fortin was their main spokesperson.

Understanding Québec debout

This group was made up of Members of Parliament (MPs). MPs are people who are elected to represent their local area in the Canadian government. They work in the House of Commons of Canada. Québec debout was a "parliamentary group," which means it was a group of MPs who worked together on certain ideas. They had ideas like Social democracy (which means they believed in fairness and helping everyone in society), Regionalism (focusing on the needs of their region, Quebec), and Quebec nationalism (supporting the unique culture and identity of Quebec).

How Québec debout Started

The Groupe parlementaire québécois was formed on February 28, 2018. Seven Members of Parliament (MPs) decided to leave another political group called the Bloc Québécois (BQ). They left because they disagreed with the leader of the Bloc Québécois at the time, Martine Ouellet. These seven MPs then formed their own group to work together in the House of Commons. Later, on June 6, 2018, their group officially changed its name to Québec debout.

Rejoining the Bloc Québécois

Even though they formed their own group, the story of Québec debout did not last very long. In September 2018, just a few months after forming, Rhéal Fortin and the other Members of Parliament who were part of Québec debout decided to rejoin the Bloc Québécois. This meant that Québec debout stopped being a separate group.
