Rhéal Fortin is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He is a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area called Rivière-du-Nord. An MP is someone elected by people in their area to represent them in the Canadian government.
Before becoming a politician, Mr. Fortin was a lawyer. He was the president of a law firm in Saint-Jérôme. He studied law at the University of Sherbrooke. In 2015, he was elected to the House of Commons as part of the Bloc Québécois party.
After the 2015 election, Mr. Fortin became the temporary leader of the Bloc Québécois. This happened on October 22, 2015, after the previous leader, Gilles Duceppe, stepped down. Mr. Fortin served as the temporary leader until a new permanent leader, Martine Ouellet, was chosen in March 2017.
In February 2018, Mr. Fortin and six other Bloc MPs left the party. They did this because they had disagreements with Ms. Ouellet's leadership style. They then formed a new group called Québec debout. Mr. Fortin was the spokesperson for this new group. However, he later rejoined the Bloc Québécois in September 2018.
About Rhéal Fortin
Rhéal Fortin was born in Laval-des-Rapides, Quebec. He started working at a young age, when he was 18. He first earned a diploma to become an electrician. This is like a certificate from a college that teaches specific job skills.
From 1977 to 1985, he worked in a factory in Laval. After that, he decided to go to university to study law. He finished his law studies and began working as a lawyer in Saint-Jérôme in 1992.
His Political Journey
Mr. Fortin has been interested in politics since he was in high school. He even volunteered to help put up signs for the Parti Québécois. This is a political party in Quebec.
In 2015, he ran for election in the Rivière-du-Nord area as a member of the Bloc Québécois. He won the election and became an MP. On October 22, 2015, he was named the temporary leader of the Bloc Québécois. He later announced in December 2016 that he would not try to become the permanent leader of the party.
Until February 2018, Mr. Fortin was the Bloc Québécois's spokesperson for different topics in the House of Commons. These topics included human rights and justice. When he and six other MPs left the Bloc, they formed a new group called the Groupe parlementaire québécois. Mr. Fortin became the spokesperson for this new group on March 21, 2018.
Since 2021, he has been the justice spokesperson for the Bloc Québécois. This means he focuses on issues related to laws and the justice system for his party.
