Rhéal Éloi Fortin is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He is a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Rivière-du-Nord. An MP is someone elected to represent their community in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for Canada.
Mr. Fortin is a lawyer by profession. He works at a law firm in Saint-Jérôme. He studied law at the University of Sherbrooke. He was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 election. He ran as a member of the Bloc Québécois party.
After the 2015 election, Mr. Fortin became the temporary leader of the Bloc Québécois. This happened on October 22, 2015. He took over after the previous leader, Gilles Duceppe, stepped down. Mr. Fortin served as interim leader until a new leader, Martine Ouellet, was chosen on March 18, 2017.
In February 2018, Mr. Fortin and six other Bloc MPs left the party's group in Parliament. They became independent MPs because they disagreed with Ms. Ouellet's leadership. Mr. Fortin then became the spokesperson for a new group they formed called Québec debout. He rejoined the Bloc Québécois group in Parliament on September 17, 2018.
