Profession Lawyer

Rhéal Éloi Fortin is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He is a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Rivière-du-Nord. An MP is someone elected to represent their community in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for Canada.

Mr. Fortin is a lawyer by profession. He works at a law firm in Saint-Jérôme. He studied law at the University of Sherbrooke. He was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 election. He ran as a member of the Bloc Québécois party.

After the 2015 election, Mr. Fortin became the temporary leader of the Bloc Québécois. This happened on October 22, 2015. He took over after the previous leader, Gilles Duceppe, stepped down. Mr. Fortin served as interim leader until a new leader, Martine Ouellet, was chosen on March 18, 2017.

In February 2018, Mr. Fortin and six other Bloc MPs left the party's group in Parliament. They became independent MPs because they disagreed with Ms. Ouellet's leadership. Mr. Fortin then became the spokesperson for a new group they formed called Québec debout. He rejoined the Bloc Québécois group in Parliament on September 17, 2018.

About Rhéal Fortin

His Political Journey

Mr. Fortin has been interested in politics since high school. He volunteered to help the Parti Québécois party. In 2015, he ran for the Bloc Québécois in the Rivière-du-Nord area and won.

He became the temporary leader of the Bloc Québécois on October 22, 2015. On December 7, 2016, he announced he would not try to become the permanent leader.

Before February 2018, Mr. Fortin was the Bloc Québécois's spokesperson for several important topics. These included human rights, justice, and access to information. In February 2018, he and six other Bloc MPs left the party's group. They formed a new group called the Groupe parlementaire québécois. This was because they disagreed with the leadership style of Martine Ouellet. Mr. Fortin was named the spokesperson for this new group on March 21, 2018.

Since 2021, he has been the justice spokesperson for the Bloc Québécois. This means he speaks for the party on issues related to justice.
