Discover Quéntar!

Quéntar is in the middle of the province of Granada. It sits right on the Aguas Blancas river. This area is famous for its beautiful natural scenery.

The Quéntar Reservoir

The Quéntar Reservoir is a very important part of the region. It was officially opened on May 11, 1976. The reservoir is built between two hills, Bermejales and Castillejo.

Dam Details

The dam wall is over 100 meters (about 330 feet) tall. It can hold a huge amount of water, around 13 million cubic meters. This water is vital for many people and farms.

Why the Reservoir is Important

The main goal of the Quéntar Reservoir is to supply water to the city of Granada. It also provides water for farming in the nearby areas. Together with the Canales swamp, it gives water to more than 300,000 people. It also helps irrigate about 10,000 hectares (about 25,000 acres) of farmland.

The reservoir collects water from a large area of 101.5 square kilometers. On average, it contributes about 35.7 million cubic meters of water each year. The water flows through a special channel from Quéntar. This channel connects with another one from the Canales swamp. They meet at a water treatment plant near Cenes.

How the Dam is Built

The dam itself is a special type called a "double-curved vault." It's 133 meters (about 436 feet) high and 200 meters (about 656 feet) long at the top. Building it involved moving 175,000 cubic meters of earth. They also used 275,000 cubic meters of concrete!

The dam has a spillway that can release a lot of water very quickly if needed. It has two large gates that open to let water flow out. The dam's thickness changes from 19.40 meters at its base to 3.50 meters at the top. It also has two large pipes to drain water.

Keeping an Eye on the Dam

Engineers constantly watch the dam to make sure it's safe. They have special equipment to check for any changes. This includes tools that measure how much the dam moves or changes shape. They also check its temperature and how much stress it's under. This helps them know the dam is always working well and is secure.
