History of Quarrelwood Castle
Building the Castle
Quarrelwood Castle was built in the 14th century. The person who built it was named Robert Lauder of the Bass. He was a very important judge, known as the Justiciar of Scotia, which meant he was a chief justice in Scotland.
Who Owned Quarrelwood Castle?
Over time, the castle changed hands many times. It often passed to new families through marriage.
- The Chisholm Family: Robert Lauder's daughter, Ann, married a man named Robert Chisholm. This is how the castle first passed to the Chisholm family.
- The Sutherland Family: Later, a woman named Muriel Chisholm married Alexander Sutherland, 3rd of Duffus. She was the daughter of John Chisholm. This marriage brought the castle into the Sutherland family in the 15th century.
- Other Owners: For a short time, a man named William Duff of Dipple owned the castle. But then, his daughter married William Sutherland of Roscommon. This meant the castle returned to another branch of the Sutherland family.
The Castle's End
Quarrelwood Castle was used for a long time. People lived there until the middle of the 18th century. After that, it slowly became a ruin. Eventually, the castle was taken apart. Its stones and other materials were used to build other things in the local area.
