Alexander Sutherland, 3rd of Duffus (died 1482) was an important Scottish nobleman. He belonged to a branch of the powerful Clan Sutherland.

Laird of Duffus

Alexander was the son of Henry Sutherland of Torboll. His mother was Margaret Mureff or Moray. He took over the lands of Torboll from his father. He also inherited Duffus from his uncle, John Sutherland, 2nd of Duffus. His grandfather was Nicholas Sutherland, 1st of Duffus.

Around 1433, Alexander married Murial Chisholm. She was the daughter of John Chisholm of Of that Ilk. Through this marriage, Alexander gained new lands. These included Quarrelwood and Greschip, near Elgin, Moray. Because of this marriage, the Sutherland of Duffus family added a boar's head to their coat of arms. This symbol came from the Chisholm family's own coat of arms.

Alexander Sutherland became Laird of Duffus before March 13, 1433. He granted some land in Strathbrock or Broxburn to Robert Crichton. This area is in West Lothian. He also owned land called Ledbothy in Forfarshire. He sold this land in 1455.

In 1444, Alexander Sutherland visited his clan chief. This was John Sutherland, 7th Earl of Sutherland. The Earl was being held in Pontefract Castle in England. He was a hostage for the ransom of James I of Scotland. During his visit, Alexander got confirmation of his lands in Torboll. This meant his ownership was officially recognized.

Alexander Sutherland was known as Sir Alexander Sutherland of Duffus. He was alive in 1469 and 1478. He passed away in 1482.
