Quarry is a small, quiet place in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
The Story of Quarry
Quarry was started by a company called Le Grand Quarry in 1868. It got its name because of the stone quarries nearby. A post office opened in Quarry in 1869, but it closed down in 1909.
Life in Early Quarry
Quarry was famous for its many limestone quarries. Limestone is a type of rock used in building. In 1912, the community had a train station, a school, a general store, and a few houses.
During its busiest time, between 60 and 150 people worked in the quarries. They helped dig out the stone. By 1940, about 144 people lived in Quarry.
