Becoming Queen of Armenia
Isabella was born around 1216 or 1217. When her father, King Leo I, died in 1219, she became the new queen. At first, because she was so young, important leaders helped her rule. These helpers were called regents. Two of the main regents were Adam of Baghras and Constantine of Baberon. They made sure the kingdom was managed well until Isabella was old enough to rule on her own.
Isabella's Marriages and Family
Queen Isabella was married two times during her life. These marriages were important for the kingdom and its future.
First Marriage to Philip
Isabella's first husband was a prince named Philip. He was the son of Bohemund IV of Antioch, a powerful ruler from a nearby land. Isabella and Philip got married in 1223. However, their marriage did not last long. Philip died just two years later, in 1225.
Second Marriage to Hethum I
After Philip's death, Isabella married again. Her second husband was Hethum I. They were married on June 14, 1226. Hethum became a co-ruler with Isabella, meaning they ruled the kingdom together. He continued to rule even after Isabella's death, until 1270.
Isabella and Hethum had six children together. Their children helped continue the royal family line:
- Leo III (died 1289)
- Thoros (died 1266)
- Sibylle (died 1290), who married Bohemund VI of Antioch
- Euphemie (died 1309), who married Julien Grenier, the Lord of Sidon
- Rita of Armenia
- Maria of Armenia, who married Guy d'Ibelin
