The Queensland Heritage Council is a special group in Queensland, Australia. It was set up by the Queensland Parliament to help protect important old places and stories. The Council gives advice to the Queensland Government, especially to the Minister for Environment. It also looks after the Queensland Heritage Register, which is a list of places worth protecting.

Who is on the Council?

The Queensland Heritage Council has different people on it. These people are chosen by the Governor in Council. They include:

  • People from groups like the National Trust of Queensland. This group helps save old buildings.
  • People from the Local Government Association of Queensland. This group represents local councils.
  • Someone from the Queensland Council of Unions. This group helps workers.
  • A person who represents people who own or manage properties in Queensland.
  • A person who represents farming and country businesses in Queensland.
  • Seven other people who know a lot about saving old places and history. They are experts in heritage conservation.

The current members of the Council are Debbie Best (Chairperson), Judy Brien, Kathy Davis, Andrew Barnes, Alice Hampson, Ann-Marie Allen, Dr Katie McConnel, Andrew Ladlay, Cr Judith Peters, Stuart Lummis, Claire Wiles and George Seymour (Deputy Chairperson).

What the Council Does

The Queensland Heritage Council has several important jobs. They work to keep Queensland's history alive.

  • They give advice to the Minister about Queensland's cultural heritage. This includes ideas on how to protect old places.
  • They share information with everyone to help them understand Queensland's history better. This makes people more interested in it.
  • They advise other groups, like government departments, on how to protect heritage.
  • They encourage good ways to look after important historical places.
  • They also do other tasks given to them by the government or the law.

Queensland Heritage Register

The Queensland Heritage Register is a special list of places. These places are protected by law because they are important to Queensland's history. To get on this list, a place must be suggested. Then, it goes through a review process. People from the public can also share their thoughts.

Right now, there are over 1600 places on the Register. Some famous examples include the Story Bridge in Brisbane and Paronella Park in Cairns.
