The St. Philip Neri Cathedral is a Catholic church in Querétaro, Mexico. It is also known as the Querétaro Cathedral. This important building was originally built by a group called the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.
Building History
This church was built a long time ago, between 1786 and 1804. A priest named Father Martin de San Cayetano asked for it to be built. It was officially blessed on September 19, 1805, by Father Miguel Hidalgo.
Becoming a Cathedral
Later, the group that built the church left the area. A bishop and historian named Francisco Banegas y Galván wanted the church to become a cathedral. He asked the Pope for permission. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV agreed, and the church was officially named a cathedral. It was then consecrated in 1931.
Architectural Style
The St. Philip Neri Cathedral is special because it was one of the last buildings made during the colonial period in Mexico. It shows a mix of two different building styles. You can see parts of the old Baroque style and newer Neoclassical designs. The outside of the building is made from quarry stone and a reddish volcanic rock called tezontle.
