The St. Philip Neri Cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church in Querétaro City, Mexico. It is also known as the Querétaro Cathedral. A group called the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri built this important building.
History of the Cathedral
The construction of this church began in 1786. It was finished in 1804. The Order of San Felipe Neri built it because Father Martin de San Cayetano asked them to.
An important historical figure, Father Miguel Hidalgo, blessed the church on September 19, 1805. He is famous for starting Mexico's fight for independence.
Later, the original order left the church. A bishop and historian named Francisco Banegas y Galván asked for the building to become a cathedral. This request was approved.
In 1921, Pope Benedict XV officially declared the church a cathedral. It was then consecrated, or formally dedicated, in 1931.
Architecture and Design
The St. Philip Neri Cathedral is one of the last major buildings constructed during Mexico's colonial period. This means it shows a mix of two different architectural styles.
It marks the change from the Baroque style to the Neoclassical style. Baroque buildings often have lots of fancy decorations. Neoclassical buildings are usually simpler and more like ancient Greek or Roman designs.
The outside of the cathedral is made from two main materials. These are quarry stone and a reddish volcanic rock called tezontle.
