Quiggin's facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Quiggin's is a company that makes delicious sweets. It is especially famous for making Kendal Mint Cake. Quiggin's is the oldest company still making this special mint cake. In fact, only two other companies, Romney's and Wilson's, make Kendal Mint Cake today.

The Story of Quiggin's Sweets

Quiggin's started a long time ago, in 1840. A man named William Quiggin began his sweet company on the Isle of Man. He made tasty treats like coconut ice and bullseye candies.

A Royal Visit and Special Candy

Seven years later, in 1847, something exciting happened! Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Ramsey on the Isle of Man. William Quiggin and his daughter met them. William's daughter gave Prince Albert a special stick of rock candy. This candy had the words "Welcome Prince Albert to Mona" written inside it. It also showed the Manx triskelion, a symbol of the Isle of Man. Some people believe this was the very first rock candy with letters inside!

Moving to Kendal and Mint Cake

In 1872, William's son, Daniel, moved to Kendal. He started his own sweet company there. This company is what we know as Quiggin's today. Soon after, Quiggin's began making Kendal Mint Cake. Even though another company invented it in 1869, Quiggin's quickly became known for it.

Mint Cake on Adventures

Quiggin's has been part of some amazing adventures! In 1975, Quiggin's was the first company to cover their mint cake in chocolate. That same year, a famous climber named Sir Chris Bonington took Quiggin's Kendal Mint Cake with him. He ate it during his climb up Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain!

Later, in 1990, Quiggin's Kendal Mint Cake went on another big trip. It was taken on the first successful non-motorized journey across Antarctica. This shows how popular and useful Kendal Mint Cake is for explorers!
