Fun Festivals in Quila
Quila el Grande has many exciting traditions. One of the biggest events happens at the start of every year.
Celebrating the Virgin of Guadalupe
From January 1st to January 9th, the town celebrates the Catholic Virgin of Guadalupe. Each day, a different family or area of the town takes part. People gather at the church to sing "Las Mañanitas" to the Virgin Mary.
Later, a parade starts at the edge of town. It has colorful floats and traditional Indian dances. The parade leads everyone to the Catholic church in the middle of the village. After church, the local plaza becomes a fun fair. There are carnival games, bouncy houses, and trampolines. A band plays music for everyone to enjoy. At night, small fireworks called "toritos" are lit. Beautiful firework towers, called "castillos," also light up the sky. Sometimes, even more fireworks burst above the town!
Bull Riding and Dances
After January 9th, from January 10th to January 14th or 15th, the "Fiestas Taurinas" take place. During these days, people spend time at the "terraza." Bands play traditional music there. For lunch, a special dish called "Birria" is served. It comes with rice, beans, and tortillas.
In the evening, the band marches through town to "El Toril." This is where the bulls are kept. Many people gather to watch "La Jaripea." This is a show where skilled people tease and ride powerful bulls and beautiful horses. After this, there is a big dance, called a "baile." It happens in a hall or at the plaza. Many visitors come to Quila for these exciting festivals!
