Quinchía, often called the Villa de los Cerros (which means Village of the Hills), is a cool town and a Municipality in the Risaralda area of Colombia. It's about 110 kilometers (about 68 miles) away from Pereira, which is the capital city of Risaralda. In 2023, about 27,890 people lived in Quinchía.
History of Quinchía
Around 1842, the local indigenous people, who had faced many challenges, decided to formally organize their community. This led to the creation of a settlement called Quinchía Viejo.
Later, on November 29, 1886, the modern municipality of Quinchía was formed. This happened thanks to the efforts of people like Gabriel Vinasco, Zoilo Bermúdez, José Natalio, and Protasio Gómez.
Quinchía officially became a town on November 29, 1888. Then, on April 24, 1912, it was declared a full municipality. Early in the 20th century, the land that was once set aside for indigenous communities changed hands. This happened through various agreements and actions by settlers from the Antioquia region.
Quinchía is located in the famous Colombian coffee growing axis. This entire area is so special that UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2011. It's known as the "Coffee Cultural Landscape."
Climate and Weather
Quinchía has a subtropical highland climate. This means it has a mild and pleasant climate all year round. The average temperature in Quinchía is about 18 °C (64 °F). This makes it a comfortable place to live and visit.
