The Quinsigamond Branch Library building is a historic place in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was once a library and is now part of the Quinsigamond Elementary School.
This building was constructed in 1913. It was built with money given by a famous businessman named Andrew Carnegie. He even helped lay the first stone for the building! In 1980, this special building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important places in the United States.
About the Building
The old Quinsigamond Branch Library building is located at 14 Blackstone River Road. It is a single-story building made of red brick. It has nice limestone decorations.
The front of the building faces east. It has a balanced design. There is a main entrance in the middle. This entrance has a small porch supported by round columns. On each side of the entrance, there are three windows. These windows have pretty designs above them. The roof is flat, but you can't see it because of a decorative wall on top. Today, this old library building is connected to the elementary school next door.
History of the Library
This library was one of three in Worcester that received money from Andrew Carnegie. Before these branch libraries were built, people in neighborhoods far from the city center had to travel a long way. They had to go to the main library or use special pickup spots.
The land for the library was given by the American Steel and Wire Company. The architects who designed the building were the Fuller & Delano Company from Worcester. The library served the community for many years.
In 1990, this library branch, along with others, was closed. After that, it became part of the Quinsigamond Elementary School. Now, the building is used as the school's cafeteria.
