Rıfat Ilgaz: His Life Story

Rıfat Ilgaz was born in Cide, a town in what was then the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey). He became one of Turkey's most well-known and active writers. He wrote over sixty books! Rıfat Ilgaz started writing poems when he was still in junior school. He grew up to be a writer who focused on real-life issues in his stories. His poems are great examples of writing that shows the lives of ordinary people.

Even though he didn't belong to a specific political group, he wrote about people's difficulties. This made his work seem to come from a left-wing point of view. Like other writers of his time, Rıfat Ilgaz sometimes faced challenges because of what he published.

Besides writing, he also had a successful career as a teacher of Turkish literature. He wrote for a literary magazine called Adımlar between 1943 and 1944. In 1946, he helped start a popular funny weekly magazine called Marko Paşa. He worked on this magazine with other famous writers like Aziz Nesin and Sabahattin Ali.

Rıfat Ilgaz passed away in Istanbul on July 7, 1993, due to lung problems. He was buried at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
