The RAAF Memorial is a special monument located on West Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia. It was built to remember brave airmen. This memorial was added to the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List on June 22, 2004. This means it's an important historical site protected by the Australian government.

What Does the RAAF Memorial Look Like?

The RAAF Memorial is found near the southwest part of the West Island Settlement. It is placed between a road and the beach.

The memorial is made up of four stone monuments. These are surrounded by a steel fence. The largest monument has a message that explains its purpose. It says that airmen lost their lives trying to save others. This happened on Sunday, April 6, 1952. They were trying to rescue Atkinson and four Royal Navy Marines who were in danger of drowning near the reef.

In the year 2000, people noted that the stone parts of the memorial were still in good shape. However, the steel fence around it was starting to rust.

Why is This Memorial Important?

The RAAF Memorial is very important because it connects to how the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Australia grew after World War II. During this time, air travel started to make isolated places like these islands feel less far away.

The design and care of the RAAF Memorial show how much the people of the islands valued the events of World War II. The fact that it is still well-kept proves that it holds a special meaning for the community. It reminds everyone of the brave people who served and the sacrifices they made.
