RHS Garden Bridgewater is a brand new garden created by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). It is their fifth public garden and a really exciting project!

This amazing garden is located in Worsley, which is in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. It opened its doors in May 2021, inviting everyone to explore its beautiful spaces.

Exploring RHS Garden Bridgewater

RHS Garden Bridgewater is built on a huge piece of land. This land used to be part of the historic Worsley New Hall estate. It covers an area of 156 acres, which is like 118 football fields!

The Bridgewater Canal runs along the southern edge of the garden. This canal is famous for being one of the first true canals in Britain.

A Big Gardening Project

This garden is the first new garden the RHS has opened since 2001. That's a long time! It's also one of the biggest gardening projects happening in Europe.

A famous landscape architect named Tom Stuart-Smith helped design the overall plan for the garden. He made sure to bring back some of the old beauty of the estate.

What You Can See

When you visit, you'll find many interesting features:

  • A restored walled kitchen garden: This is where fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown.
  • Historic pathways: Like the tree-lined Garden Approach, which has been brought back to life.
  • Reworked terraces: These are old, stepped garden areas that have been given a new look.

Marcus Chilton-Jones was chosen to be the first curator of the garden. A curator is like a manager who looks after the garden and its plants.

How the Garden Was Funded

Creating a garden this big costs a lot of money. The total cost for RHS Garden Bridgewater was about £32.7 million.

The RHS invested a big part of this money themselves. They also received help from grants and donations. For example, the Garfield Weston Foundation gave a large grant of £5 million. Salford City Council also made donations to help build this wonderful garden.
