The Story of RIU Hotels
The history of RIU is a story of growth, from one small hotel to a worldwide chain.
A Small Start in Spain
In 1953, the Riu family bought their very first hotel, the San Francisco, on the island of Mallorca. The founders were Juan Riu and Maria Bertrán, along with their son, Luis Riu Bertrán.
During the 1960s and 1970s, more and more tourists began visiting Spain. The Riu family's hotels became very popular. In 1977, they teamed up with a large travel company called TUI. This partnership helped RIU grow even faster.
Expanding Beyond the Islands
For many years, RIU's hotels were only in the Balearic Islands of Spain. But in 1985, they opened their first hotel on the mainland, in Gran Canaria. This was a big step for the company.
In 1991, RIU opened its first hotel in the Americas, the Riu Taino in Punta Cana. This was the start of their international journey. Today, RIU has many hotels across North and South America.
New Ideas and New Places
After Luis Riu Bertrán passed away in 1998, his children, Carmen and Luis Riu, took over. They are still in charge of the company.
In 2010, RIU launched a new type of hotel called "RIU Plaza." These hotels are located in the middle of big cities, like New York and Madrid, instead of on beaches. This allowed them to welcome business travelers and city explorers.
The company continued to expand, opening its first hotel in Asia in 2016, the Riu Sri Lanka.
A Focus on the Future
RIU has been working to make its hotels better for the planet. In 2024, they announced a new plan called Proudly Committed. This is a sustainability strategy, which means it's a plan to run the hotels in a way that protects the environment and helps local communities. This plan helps get RIU ready for a future where being responsible is more important than ever.
