RIU Hotels & Resorts is a Spanish company that owns many hotels. It was started by the Riu family in 1953 as a small business for holiday trips. They opened their first hotel in Mallorca, Spain. For a while, another company called TUI owned almost half of RIU. But in May 2021, the Riu family took full ownership of the company again.
RIU mainly focuses on hotels for people on holiday. More than 70% of their hotels offer an "all-inclusive" service. This means your room, food, drinks, and some activities are all paid for together.
In 2010, RIU started a new type of hotel called Riu Plaza. These are city hotels, often in big cities like London. By 2020, RIU had 98 hotels in 19 different countries. They had over 31,000 employees and served almost 5 million customers.
