History of ROW DTLA
Building the Terminal Mart
The buildings at ROW DTLA were first built between 1917 and 1923. They were designed by a famous Los Angeles architect named John Parkinson. This huge complex was called the Los Angeles Terminal Mart.
A Hub for Produce
The Terminal Mart was a very important place for farmers. It was located at the end of the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. This made it easy to bring fresh produce from farms to the city by train. It became a national center for selling fruits and vegetables.
Over time, this large area became known as Alameda Square. It was one of the biggest private building projects in Los Angeles in the early 1900s. It helped connect the city's port to downtown by rail.
The World's Second Largest Market
At one point, most of the fresh produce sold in America passed through this complex. It grew to be the second largest wholesale market in the entire world! From the 1920s to the 1980s, it had two of Los Angeles's biggest produce markets: the Seventh Street and Ninth Street markets. In 1986, these markets joined together to become the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market.
A Modern Transformation
Before it became ROW DTLA, the site was used by a clothing company called American Apparel. They had their main offices and factories there until the late 2010s. Now, ROW DTLA has been updated. It's a busy and modern place for people to enjoy, while still keeping its important history.
