Smorgasburg in Brooklyn, June 2012

Smorgasburg is a popular outdoor food market. It started in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, right by the East River. This market is held every Saturday in an open space. The name "Smorgasburg" is a mix of two words: "Smörgåsbord" (a type of buffet meal) and "Williamsburg." Many different food sellers, called vendors, come here to sell their tasty foods and other items.

Smorgasburg began in 2011. It was created by Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby. They also started another market called Brooklyn Flea. Some businesses could not join Brooklyn Flea because there was not enough room. So, the founders decided to make a new market just for food. They chose Brooklyn because it was a good location and space was affordable. The food sold at Smorgasburg is often made in small amounts and is very creative. Smorgasburg quickly became very popular. Some vendors who started there were even able to open their own permanent stores.
