Sultana Raadhafathi (Dhivehi: އައްސުލްޠާނާ ރާދަފަތި ސިރީ ސުވަމަ އަބާރަނަ މަހާރެހެންދި) was a queen who ruled the Maldives in the late 1300s. She was known as a "Sultana regnant," which means she ruled the country herself, not just as a queen married to a king.
Who Was Sultana Raadhafathi?
Sultana Raadhafathi was an important ruler in the history of the Maldives. She was part of the Theemuge dynasty, a family that ruled the islands for a long time. Her full name was Mariyam Raadhafathi al-Rehendhi.
Family Background
Raadhafathi was the third daughter of Sultan Omar I. This means she had two older sisters. One of her sisters, Rehendhi Khadijah, also ruled the Maldives before her.
Becoming a Ruler
Raadhafathi became the ruler of the Maldives in the year 1380. She took the throne after her sister, Rehendhi Khadijah, passed away. This made her one of the few women in history to rule the Maldives in her own right.
Her Short Reign
Sultana Raadhafathi's time as ruler was quite short. She reigned for about three years, from 1380 to 1383. After this brief period, she decided to step down. She gave the throne to her husband, Mohamed of Maakurath, who then became the new Sultan. She passed away in 1383.
