Rabbel II Soter facts for kids
Rabbel II Soter was the last king of the Nabataean Kingdom. He ruled from the year 70 to 106 AD. His name in the ancient Nabataean language meant "Rabbel, who gave life and deliverance to his people."
Early Life and Reign
Rabbel II became king when he was still a child. This happened after his father, Malichus II, passed away. Because Rabbel was so young, his mother, Shaqilath II, took charge of the government. She helped rule the kingdom during his early years.
Rabbel also had a sister named Gamilath. She became the queen of the Nabataeans.
The Title "Soter"
Rabbel II gave himself a special Greek title: "Soter". This word means "Savior." Kings often used titles like this to show their importance. It also showed they were protecting their people.
End of the Nabataean Kingdom
Rabbel II ruled for many years, until 106 AD. After he died, the Roman emperor Trajan decided to conquer the Nabataean Kingdom. The Romans faced almost no fighting. They took control of the kingdom on March 22, 106 AD.
The Nabataean Kingdom then became a part of the Roman Empire. It was renamed the Roman province of Arabia Petraea. The city of Bosra became its new capital. This marked the end of the independent Nabataean Kingdom.
