About Rachel Bess's Art
Rachel Bess studied painting at Arizona State University. She earned her degree in 2001. Later, she taught art classes in Tempe, Arizona, from 2002 to 2007. After that, she decided to focus on painting full-time.
Bess is famous for her oil paintings. She often paints on wooden panels. Her art is very realistic, almost like a photograph. Sometimes, her paintings also have a dream-like, or surrealistic, feel. Her style is similar to Baroque art, which was popular a long time ago. People often compare her work to famous Dutch Masters painters. She also has a style that fits into the lowbrow art movement.
In 2014, Rachel Bess won an award. It was called the Arlene and Morton Scult Contemporary Forum Artist Award. This award comes from a group that supports the Phoenix Art Museum.
What Inspires Her Paintings
In 2016, Bess created a series of paintings for an art show. The show was called Art Miami. These paintings showed rotting fruit. She had been working on this topic for several years. These artworks were her way of thinking about the human body, getting older, and life ending.
In December 2016, she received a grant of $5000. This money came from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. She planned to use it to study a painting technique called underpainting for four months.
Other Projects and Interests
Rachel Bess helps organize a group in Phoenix called Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School. This group offers fun drawing sessions. She also writes and draws a comic book. It is called "Fighting Death Through Reanimation."
For a while, Bess worked with Perihelion Arts in Phoenix. Now, she is represented by the Lisa Sette Gallery in Phoenix.
She is also an expert at raising chickens in the city. She even wrote a book about it called "Fowl Play."
