Rachel's Early Life
Rachel Molly Hamilton was born in Ireland. She later moved to Partick, a town near Glasgow, Scotland, where she lived with her husband. Rachel was very tall and strong for her time. She stood about 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed around 238 pounds. Because of her impressive size, people started calling her 'Big Rachel'.
Unusual Jobs for a Woman
Rachel took on many jobs that were not common for women in the 1800s. She worked as a labourer, which means she did hard physical work. One of her jobs was in a shipyard called Tod and Macgregor's. She also worked as a forewoman navvy (a worker who builds roads or railways) in a brickworks in Jordanhill. Rachel even worked as a farm labourer, helping with tasks on a farm. These jobs showed how strong and determined she was.
The Partick Riots of 1875
The Partick Riots were a big event that happened in Partick, Glasgow, starting on August 6, 1875. These riots lasted for three days. They began when Irish immigrants in Glasgow wanted to celebrate the 100th birthday of a famous Irish leader, Daniel O'Connell. Other people in Glasgow protested against this celebration, leading to unrest.
What Caused the Riots?
Partick was growing very fast in the 1870s. Its population jumped from about 17,700 to 27,400 people. This quick growth sometimes led to tensions. The main area where the riots happened was at Partick Cross. At that time, Partick had its own police force because it was a police burgh (a town with its own local government and police).
Big Rachel's Role in the Riots
To help control the situation, about 30 local people were asked to become special constables. These were ordinary citizens who were given special powers to help the police for a short time. Big Rachel was one of these brave individuals. Her job was to help push back the rioters and restore peace. Her strength and courage made her a notable figure during this challenging time.
Remembering Big Rachel
Today, Big Rachel's story is still remembered. Her life and actions are part of a special walking tour. This tour is run by the Glasgow Women's Library. It highlights the stories of important local women, making sure their contributions to history are not forgotten.
