Rafael's father was Gabriel Arias-Salgado, who served as a minister during the time of Francisco Franco. His brother, Fernando Arias-Salgado, was a diplomat and once led the Spanish TV company.
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Rafael Arias-Salgado first became a lawyer. He then entered politics, serving as a deputy (like a representative) for the UCD party. He represented the area of Toledo from 1977 to 1982.
During this time, he held several important roles as a minister:
- Minister of relationships within the Cortes (1979–1980)
- Minister to the President of the Cortes (1980–1981)
- Minister of territorial administration (1981–1982)
Career in Business and Return to Politics
After the UCD party was no longer active, Rafael Arias-Salgado worked in private business. He was the president of Prosegur, a security company, from 1983 to 1985.
In 1987, he returned to politics. He joined a new party called the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS). He was a deputy for this party, representing Madrid from 1990 to 1992.
Later, in 1993, he joined the Partido Popular. He served as the Minister of Public Works from 1996 to 2000.
Current Role
Today, Rafael Arias-Salgado is the President of the Carrefour group in Spain.
