Rafael Guillén's Poetic Journey
Rafael Guillén's early poems showed the influence of a classical style, which was common for many writers of his time. However, he soon started to explore themes from everyday life and popular culture. His book Cancionero-guía para andar por el aire de Granada (1962) showed this change.
Evolving His Style
By the 1960s, Guillén began to move away from the strict rules of traditional poetry. He started experimenting more with how his poems were structured. When he published Moheda in 1979, readers were surprised by his fresh and bold writing style, especially in how he used sentences.
Prose and Other Writings
Besides poetry, Rafael Guillén also wrote many works in prose. This included stories about his travels, parts of his own life story, essays (short pieces of writing on a particular subject), lectures, and articles for newspapers or magazines.
Recordings of His Work
Rafael Guillén's poems were also featured in musical recordings. This is often called a discography.
- Los alrededores del tiempo (Granada, 2001): This was a collection of his poems written up to the year 2000.
- Balada en tres tiempos para contrabajo y frases cotidianas (Barcelona, 2021): This recording featured nine pieces where his poems were set to music for a double bass. He created this with Xavier Astor, based on a book they both published in 2013.
His Later Years
Rafael Guillén passed away on May 4, 2023, at the age of 90. He died from a stroke.
