Rafael Molina Sánchez (born November 27, 1841 – died August 1, 1900) was a famous Spanish bullfighter. People knew him by his nickname, Lagartijo, which means "lizard" in Spanish. He was one of the most important bullfighters of his time.
Early Life
Rafael Molina was born in the city of Córdoba, Spain. His birthday was on November 27, 1841.
Bullfighting Career
Rafael Molina became a professional bullfighter on September 29, 1865. This important event is called taking the alternativa. It happened in a town called Úbeda. His sponsor, or padrino, was another famous bullfighter named Antonio Carmona y Luque, also known as El Gordito. During this event, Lagartijo fought a bull named Carabuco.
Throughout his career, Lagartijo was seriously injured seven times by bulls. He was known for his skill and bravery in the bullring.
In 1887, Lagartijo played a special role in the alternativa of Rafael Guerra Bejarano. This was when Guerra became a professional bullfighter. A special Spanish hand fan was made to remember this day. Today, you can see this fan in a collection at the Staten Island Historical Society in New York.
Lagartijo stopped bullfighting in 1893, ending his long and successful career.

Rafael Molina died in his hometown of Córdoba on August 1, 1900.
