Rafael Guerra Bejarano (nicknamed Guerrita) was a famous Spanish bullfighter. He was born in Cordoba in January 1862 and passed away on February 6, 1941. Guerrita became very well-known in the 1890s for his skills in the bullring. His uncle, José "Pepete" Damaso Rodriguez Rodriguez, was also a bullfighter. Sadly, his uncle was killed by a bull in Madrid in 1862.

Who Was Guerrita?

Guerrita began his journey in bullfighting in 1878. He started as a banderillero, which is someone who places decorated sticks (banderillas) into the bull's shoulders. He also worked as a second swordsman, helping the main bullfighter.

Starting His Career

On September 29, 1887, Guerrita officially became a full bullfighter in Madrid. This was a big step in his career. His sponsor, another famous bullfighter named "Lagartijo" Rafael Molina, helped him. On that special day, Guerrita said he trusted the audience's kindness more than his own skills. He promised to do his very best.

A Special Fan

There is a unique Spanish hand fan that remembers this important event from 1887. This fan is now kept in a collection at the Staten Island Historical Society in New York. It shows a picture of Guerrita receiving the sword from "Lagartijo." This ceremony was when Rafael Guerra Bejarano officially became a professional matador, moving up from being an apprentice.

An Incredible Day

Guerrita is famous for an amazing feat he accomplished on May 19, 1895. On this single day, he fought and killed nine bulls in three different cities! He started his day very early, at 6:00 AM, putting on his special gold and green costume.

First, at 7:00 AM, he fought three bulls in San Fernando. After that, he traveled to nearby Jerez de la Frontera. By 10:30 AM, he had killed three more bulls there. Finally, at 5:30 PM, he was in Seville where he killed three additional bulls. He wore the same costume all day long!

Saying Goodbye to Bullfighting

From 1890 to 1899, many people believed Guerrita was the best bullfighter. He was often mentioned alongside other top bullfighters like Lagartijo and Frascuelo. However, he surprised everyone by announcing his retirement on October 15, 1899, in Zaragoza. He said he was quitting because he felt "jinxed."

During his career, Guerrita took part in 891 bullfights. He killed 2547 bulls. He was known for never receiving the "three warnings." This means he always managed to kill the bull within the 15-minute time limit.
