Rafael Navarro Núñez (born April 25, 1946 – died July 27, 2015) was a talented Spanish painter. He was known for his unique style, which mixed different art forms.
Life and Education
Rafael Navarro Núñez began his art studies at the Córdoba School of Arts and Crafts. This was a place where he learned many different artistic skills.
In 1968, he moved to Seville to continue his advanced art education. He studied at the Santa Isabel of Hungary School of Fine Arts.
Two years later, in 1970, he joined the Saint Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. He spent three years there, focusing on various art techniques. These included painting, silkscreen printing, and mural art. He also learned xylography (wood engraving) and chalcography (copperplate engraving). At the same time, he took four drawing courses at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.
From 1980 to 1986, Navarro Núñez worked as a professor. He taught at the Córdoba School of Arts and Crafts, where he had once been a student. Eventually, he decided to leave teaching to focus completely on his painting. He passed away in 2015.
Artistic Career
Rafael Navarro Núñez had his very first solo art show in 1978. It was held at the Novart Gallery in Madrid. After this, he had more than thirty individual exhibitions. He also took part in many group art shows with other artists.
Navarro described his art style as expressionist. This means his paintings showed strong emotions and ideas. His work was a mix between Spanish "figuración" (art that shows real-life figures) and abstract art. Abstract art uses shapes, colors, and forms that don't look like real objects.
Madrid, where he trained for ten years, greatly influenced his art. He was especially inspired by famous painters like Goya, particularly Goya's darker "Black Paintings." He also admired Francis Bacon and Antonio Saura.
In December 2014, Navarro participated in a special group exhibition. It was called "60 Years of Contemporary Art" in Córdoba. This big show was held in four different places at the same time.
Kassel Exhibition
In October 2012, Rafael Navarro Núñez had a very large exhibition in Kassel, Germany. This show featured over 130 of his artworks. It covered more than 30 years of his painting career.
The exhibition was organized by Michael Wilkens, an architect and professor. Navarro displayed many works painted between 1980 and 2012. The show included some of his latest series, like Nosferatu, Matador, and Toxic Landscape. These were painted between 2004 and 2010. An art collector named Alfonso Rodríguez also added eighteen of Navarro's paintings to the exhibition. These works were from 1984 to 2004.
