Raffaele La Capria (born October 3, 1922 – died June 26, 2022) was a famous Italian writer and screenwriter. He wrote many books and helped create movies.

His book, The Mortal Wound (original title: Ferito a morte), won Italy's top book award, the Strega Prize. Many people think it is one of the best Italian books ever written.

Life and Early Years

Raffaele La Capria was born in Naples, a beautiful city in Italy. He spent his younger years there. He studied law at university.

After finishing his studies, he traveled to countries like France, England, and the United States. Later, he settled down in Rome, the capital of Italy.

Writing and Media Work

Raffaele La Capria was a very active writer. He wrote for the cultural sections of a big newspaper called Corriere della Sera. He also helped manage a literary magazine named Nuovi Argomenti.

He was very interested in English poetry from the 1930s. He wrote many articles about it. He even translated some poems, like Four Quartets by T. S. Eliot, into Italian.

In the 1950s, he created and produced radio shows for RAI, which is Italy's public broadcasting company. These shows were about plays from other countries. In 1957, he was invited to a special writing seminar at Harvard University in the United States.

Awards and Film Work

In 1961, Raffaele La Capria's novel Ferito a morte won the important Premio Strega award. This made him very well-known.

He also worked on movies as a co-screenwriter. He helped write films for the director Francesco Rosi. Some of these movies include Le mani sulla città (1963), Uomini contro (1970), and Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (1979).

In 2001, he received a special Premio Campiello award for his lifetime of writing. In 2005, his book L'estro quotidiano won the Viareggio Prize for fiction.

Raffaele La Capria was married to the actress Ilaria Occhini. He passed away in Rome on June 26, 2022, when he was 99 years old.
