Queen Rafohy was a powerful ruler of the Vazimba people in the central Highlands of Madagascar. She ruled from 1530 until her death in 1540. Her name, "Rafohy," means "The Short One." She was an important figure in the early history of the Imerina kingdom.

Queen Rafohy's Rule in Alasora

Queen Rafohy ruled from the town of Alasora. This area was a significant center for the Vazimba people. Rafohy took over as queen after the death of Queen Rangita. Some stories say Rangita was Rafohy's mother, while others say she was her adopted sister. This shows how old traditions can sometimes have different versions.

Family and Successor

Queen Rafohy's family life was important for the future of Madagascar. She was the mother of Andriamanelo, who would become a very famous king. Andriamanelo was chosen by Rafohy to rule after her. He was her oldest son from her second marriage.

Andriamanelo (who ruled from 1540 to 1575) became the first king of the Imerina kingdom. He led his people to expand their territory. He also played a key role in the history of the Vazimba people.

Vazimba Burial Traditions

The Vazimba people had unique customs, especially for burying their dead. When a Vazimba leader died, their body was often placed in sacred water. Sometimes, they used coffins made from hollowed-out logs.

It is said that when Queen Rafohy died, her body was placed in a special silver coffin. This coffin was shaped like a traditional outrigger canoe. Then, her body was submerged in a bog, just like Queen Rangita before her. This tradition shows the deep respect the Vazimba had for their leaders and their connection to nature.
