Ragged Dick; or, Street Life in New York with the Boot Blacks is a famous book written by Horatio Alger, Jr.. It's a story for boys that first appeared in a magazine called Student and Schoolmate in 1867. A year later, in 1868, it was published as a full book by A. K. Loring in Boston, Massachusetts. This book was the very first in a series of six books about Ragged Dick. It became Horatio Alger, Jr.'s most popular book ever.
The Story of Ragged Dick
Ragged Dick is a young boy living in New York City. He works as a bootblack, which means he shines shoes for people on the street. Even though he is poor, Dick is determined to make his life better. He believes in working hard and being honest.
Dick starts saving his money and opens a bank account. He also helps a weaker boy named Fosdick. Dick invites Fosdick to live in his small apartment. In return, Fosdick teaches Dick how to read, write, and do math.
One day, something exciting happens. Dick bravely saves a rich man's child from drowning. As a reward, the grateful man gives Dick money. He also offers Dick a job as a clerk in his company. This new job helps Dick move forward in life.
