Raimat facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Raimat is a small place in Lleida, a city in Catalonia, Spain. It's about 14 kilometers (around 9 miles) away from the main city. Raimat is known for its amazing wine industry.

Raimat, along with another place called Sucs, is a special kind of area in Catalonia. It's like a small town that is part of a bigger city, but it has some of its own local management. In 2008, about 489 people lived there.

A Look at Raimat's History

After a conflict known as the Reapers' War (a war that happened in the 1600s), Raimat became an empty place. All that was left was an old castle from long ago, built by Arabs.

How Raimat Became a Wine Hub

Things changed in 1914 when a landowner named Manuel Raventós bought a huge area of land in Raimat. He bought about 3,200 hectares (that's like 7,900 acres!), which included the old castle. Mr. Raventós had a big idea: he turned all this land into vineyards.

Today, this is still the largest vineyard owned by one person in all of Europe! The wine company that grew from this is also called Raimat.

Raimat Wine Gets Special Recognition

In 1983, the wine made in Raimat received a special award. It was given a Denominación de Origen, which means "Protected Geographical Status." This is like a special label that shows the wine comes from a specific place and meets certain quality rules. The wine is known under the name Costers del Segre. This recognition helps people know that Raimat wine is special and from a unique region.
