Early Life and Family
Rainier I was the oldest of three sons. His father was Lanfranco Grimaldi, who was a French clergyman and an official in Provence. His mother was Aurelia del Carretto. After Rainier's father died, his mother Aurelia married her husband's cousin, François Grimaldi. François would later play a big part in Rainier's life.
Taking the Rock of Monaco
In 1297, Rainier I joined his stepfather, François Grimaldi, and a group of men. They planned to take over the castle on the Rock of Monaco. This event is very famous in Monaco's history. It is even shown on the Monegasque coat of arms. The coat of arms shows two monks holding swords. This is because François Grimaldi dressed up as a monk to trick the guards and open the castle gates.
Rainier I held control of the Monaco castle for four years. He left the castle on April 10, 1301.
