Becoming a Member of Parliament
Ralph Benson was one of the first people of mixed race to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. An MP is someone elected to represent a group of people in the government. He was a member of the Tory political party.
He represented the area of Stafford in Parliament. He served two terms:
- From 1812 to 1818
- From 1826 to 1830
His Family Background
Ralph Benson's father was Moses Benson. He was a merchant who traded goods from the West Indies. Ralph's mother was Judith Powell. She was a free woman of mixed heritage.
