Ralph Hunt (colonist) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ralph Hunt was an important early settler who helped start the communities on what we now call Long Island, New York.

Who Was Ralph Hunt?

Ralph Hunt was an early colonist, which means he was one of the first people to settle in a new land far from his home country. He was born in London, England, in 1613. When he was 22 years old, in 1635, he sailed across the ocean to Virginia on a ship named the "Primrose."

Settling in America

After living in Virginia for some years, Ralph Hunt received official permission to own land there in 1645. This was called a "land patent." By 1652, he moved to Long Island, New York, with other English settlers from Virginia.

A Leader in Middleburgh

Ralph Hunt quickly became a leader in a place called Middleburgh. He held several important jobs:

  • He was a magistrate, which means he was like a judge or a local official who helped keep order.
  • He was a freeholder, meaning he owned land and had the right to vote.
  • He later became a Lieutenant for the British Crown. This means he was an officer in the local military, representing the King or Queen of England.

Ralph Hunt also played a role in buying land for Middleburgh from the local Native American tribes.

Supporting the British

During a time when the British were taking control of New York from the Dutch, Ralph Hunt supported the British. He even gathered a group of people to help fight against the Dutch. When the Dutch left New York, Ralph Hunt helped survey the land, which means he helped measure and map out the new town.

Family Life

Ralph Hunt married Elizabeth Jessup. They had six children: Ann, Edward, Mary, Ralph Jr., John, and Samuel. Many of his family members later moved to New Jersey and other parts of the United States.
