Middleburgh is a town located in Schoharie County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,112 people lived here. The larger area known as the Town of Middleburgh includes a smaller community called Middleburgh Village. This town is found on the eastern edge of Schoharie County, west of the city of Albany.

History of Middleburgh

Early Settlement

People first started settling near what is now Middleburgh Village around 1712. The area was once called Weiser's Dorf. This name came from its founder, Johann Conrad Weiser, Sr.. In the early years, different groups claimed ownership of the land.

American Revolution Impact

The American Revolution (a war for independence) caused many problems for the people living in Middleburgh. There were raids from areas controlled by the British. This made life very difficult for the settlers.

Town Formation

Middleburgh became a town in 1797. It was formed at the same time as Schoharie County. The land for Middleburgh came from the town of Schoharie. Middleburgh was one of the first towns created in Schoharie County. Until 1801, it was known as "Middletown."

Village Incorporation

In 1881, the community of Middleburgh decided to become its own separate village. This meant it had its own local government.

Art in Middleburgh

In 1941, an artist named Mary Earley painted a special mural for the Middleburgh post office. A mural is a large painting on a wall. Her painting was called Dance of the Hop Pickers. She used oil and tempera paints. The government's Section of Painting and Sculpture asked her to create this artwork.

The Town of Middleburgh covers about 49.3 square miles (127.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 49.2 square miles (127.4 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.1 square mile (0.2 square kilometers), is water. The eastern border of the town touches Albany County.

Waterways

The Schoharie Creek flows right through the middle of the town. Smaller creeks, like the Little Schoharie Creek and Stony Creek, join it near Middleburgh Village.

Natural Features

A famous natural landmark nearby is Vroman's Nose. It is a popular spot for hiking. Even though it's close, Vroman's Nose is actually in the neighboring town of Fulton.

  • Huntersland – Another hamlet in the southeastern part of the town, near Little Schoharie Creek. It was first known as Huntersville.
  • Middleburgh – This is the main Village of Middleburgh. It is in the southwestern part of the town where NY-30 and NY-145 meet.
  • Mill Valley – A valley located at the western town line. Line Creek, which flows through this valley, forms the town boundary.
  • West Middleburgh – A hamlet near the southwestern town border. It is on the west side of Schoharie Creek and is also known locally as "Polly Hollow."
