Ramón Xirau Subías (born January 20, 1924 – died July 26, 2017) was a talented writer, thinker, and critic. He was born in Spain but later became a citizen of Mexico. He was known for his poetry, his ideas about philosophy, and his writings about literature.

Early Life and Moving to Mexico

Ramón Xirau was born in Barcelona, Spain. In 1939, when the Spanish Civil War was ending, he moved to Mexico. He became a Mexican citizen in 1955.

Education and Teaching

Ramón Xirau studied philosophy at the UNAM. He earned a Master's Degree there. He also received a special honorary doctorate from the Universidad de las Américas.

He taught at the UNAM and was a researcher there. He worked in the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature and did research at the Institute of Philosophy Research. In 1973, he became a member of the Colegio Nacional, which is a group of very important Mexican scientists and artists.

Awards and Recognitions

Ramón Xirau received many important awards for his work.

  • He received the Legion of Honour from France. This is a very high award given by the French government.
  • He also received the Isabel la Católica award from Spain.
  • The Generalitat of Catalonia gave him the Creu de Sant Jordi award. This was for his essays and academic work in Spanish and Catalan literature.
  • At the UNAM, he received the Elías Sourasky and the Premio Universidad Nacional awards.

Professor Xirau is also known for a book he co-wrote called The Nature of Man. He wrote this book with another famous thinker, Erich Fromm.
