Ram Baran Yadav (born 4 February 1948) is a Nepali politician and a doctor. He was the very first President of Nepal. He served as president from July 23, 2008, to October 29, 2015. This was after Nepal became a republic in 2008. Before becoming president, he was the Minister of Health from 1999 to 2001. He also worked as the general secretary for the Nepali Congress political party.

Early Political Career
Ram Baran Yadav started his political journey as the Minister of State for Health. He held this position from 1991 to 1994. Later, in the 1999 election, he was chosen to be a member of the House of Representatives. He represented the Nepali Congress party. After this election, he became the Minister of Health in the government.
Facing Challenges
In May 2007, something difficult happened. Militants from a group called Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) attacked Yadav's home. His house was in a city called Janakpur. The group put up signs, raised their flags, and even set off a bomb at his house.
Despite this, Yadav continued his political work. In April 2008, he ran for election again. He won a seat in the Constituent Assembly for the Dhanusa-5 area. He received 10,392 votes.
Becoming President of Nepal
Ram Baran Yadav was chosen as the first President of Nepal on July 21, 2008. This happened after a second round of voting. He received 308 votes out of 590 in the Constituent Assembly. He won against Ram Raja Prasad Singh. Singh was supported by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
Yadav officially became president on July 23, 2008. The Chief Justice of Nepal, Kedar Prasad Giri, gave him the oath of office and secrecy. This ceremony took place at Shital Niwas, which is the presidential palace. President Yadav also gave the oath to the Vice-president, Parmanand Jha.
Role in Nepali Congress
Before becoming president, Yadav had many important roles in the Nepali Congress Party. He was a member of the Central Working Committee for 15 years. He also served on the Parliamentary Board and the Discipline Committee of the party. His last role before becoming president was General Secretary of the Nepali Congress Party.
