Rama Cay facts for kids
Rama Cay is a small island located in the Bluefields Lagoon. This lagoon is found on the eastern coast of Nicaragua. The island is home to the Rama people, an Indigenous group from the region.
History of Rama Cay
The Rama people received Rama Cay island many years ago. This happened in the 17th or 18th century. The powerful Miskito gave the island to the Rama. This was a thank you for their help. The Rama had helped the Miskito fight against the Terraba Indians.
Language Shift on the Island
A special church group, the Moravian mission, came to Rama Cay in 1857. They set up a mission on the island. After this, the Rama people started to change their language. They slowly began using Rama Cay Creole. This language is based on English. It replaced their traditional Rama language.
