Sir Sri Rama Varma XVI (born in 1858 – died on 21 March 1932) was a ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin. He was king from 1915 until 1932.

Rama Varma XVI became the king of Cochin in 1915. He took over after the previous king, Rama Varma XV, decided to step down in 1914. King Rama Varma XVI ruled the Kingdom of Cochin for many years. His time as king lasted from January 25, 1915, until his death on March 21, 1932.

What King Rama Varma XVI is Remembered For

King Rama Varma XVI is well-known for a special gift he gave. He provided a royal permission, called a Thitooram, to build a new church. This church was built inside the old fort city of Thrissur. Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours stands tall in Thrissur. It is known as the largest church in India. This grand church shows the king's kindness and support for the Christians in his kingdom.

The End of His Reign: King Rama Varma's Death

King Rama Varma XVI passed away on March 21, 1932. He died in a city called Madras, which is now known as Chennai. He was 74 years old when he died. Because he passed away in Madras, people sometimes called him 'Madrasil Theepetta Thamburan'. This means 'The Thamburan (King) who passed away in Madras'. His death happened just two months after the previous king also passed away.
