Ramekin facts for kids
A ramekin is a small, round bowl, usually made from ceramic or glass. People use ramekins to cook and serve many different kinds of food. The word "ramekin" comes from French, and even before that, from older Dutch and German words.
What is a Ramekin?
Size and Uses
Ramekins are typically small, holding about 50 to 250 milliliters (which is about 1.7 to 8.5 fluid ounces). They are super handy for serving single portions of food. You might see them used for desserts like crème brûlée or Molten chocolate cake. They are also great for savory dishes like French onion soup or soufflé. Sometimes, they hold condiments or garnishes on the side of your main meal.
Shapes and Design
Most ramekins are round and have a pretty fluted (ridged) design on the outside. But you can also find them in fun shapes like flowers, hearts, or stars! They are designed to look good when serving food.
Built for Heat
Ramekins are made to handle high temperatures. This is because they are often used in ovens to bake things. For example, when making crème brûlée, the top of the dessert is often browned with a cooking torch. The ramekin needs to be strong enough to withstand this direct flame.
