Ramesh Chandra Lahoti (born November 1, 1940 – died March 23, 2022) was a very important judge in India. He served as the 35th Chief Justice of India. This is the highest judicial position in the country. He held this role from June 1, 2004, until November 1, 2005.

Early Life and Legal Journey
Ramesh Chandra Lahoti began his legal career in 1960. He joined the Bar in Guna district, which means he became a lawyer. By 1962, he was officially registered as an advocate, ready to represent people in court.
In 1977, he was chosen directly from his law practice to become a judge. He was appointed as a District & Sessions Judge. This role involves overseeing serious cases in a specific district. After serving for about a year, he decided to return to being a lawyer in 1978. He mainly practiced law in the High Court.
Becoming a High Court Judge
Mr. Lahoti was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 3, 1988. An Additional Judge helps with the court's work. He became a permanent Judge on August 4, 1989. This meant he had a full-time, stable position on the court.
In 1994, he moved to the Delhi High Court. This court handles important legal matters in the capital city.
Joining the Supreme Court
On December 9, 1998, Ramesh Chandra Lahoti was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. This is the highest court in India. He retired from his position on his 65th birthday, after serving for 17 months as Chief Justice.

After Retirement
After retiring from the Supreme Court, Justice Lahoti continued to be involved in legal education. He joined the Advisory Board of the Indian International Model United Nations. This organization helps young people learn about global issues.
He also served as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board for the Faculty of Law at Manav Rachna University. This role meant he helped guide the university's law programs.
