Who Was Ramon Berenguer II?
Ramon Berenguer II was born around 1053 or 1054. His father was Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona, and his mother was Almodis de La Marche. He became the Count of Barcelona in 1076.
People described Ramon Berenguer II as a brave and kind leader. A historical book called the Chronicle of San Juan de la Pena said he was "exceeding brave and bold, kind, pleasant, pious, joyful, generous, and of an attractive appearance."
Ruling with His Brother
When his father passed away in 1075, Ramon Berenguer II became a co-ruler. He shared the title of Count of Barcelona with his twin brother, Berenguer Ramon II. Their father had wanted them to rule together peacefully.
However, the twin brothers found it hard to agree on things. They decided to divide their lands and power between them. This was against their father's wishes.
His Mysterious Death
Ramon Berenguer II, known as "the Towhead," died in 1082. He was killed while hunting in the woods. He was only about 29 years old.
Many people at the time suspected his brother, Berenguer Ramon II, was involved in his death. After Ramon Berenguer II's death, his brother became the sole ruler of Catalonia. Berenguer Ramon II was sometimes called "the Fratricide" because of these suspicions.
Ramon Berenguer II's son, Ramon Berenguer III, later took over the rule from his uncle.
