Ramsay: A Montana Community's Story

Ramsay has an interesting history that goes back to the time of World War I.

Building a Town for Workers

During World War I, there was a big need for dynamite. This dynamite was used in the copper mines located nearby in Butte. To help with this, a company called DuPont built a factory in Ramsay to make dynamite.

Along with the factory, a special community was built for the people who worked there. This was a "planned community," meaning the homes and other buildings were designed and built specifically for the factory workers and their families. The town even got its own post office in 1916.

The Factory Closes

However, the factory's time in Ramsay was short. In 1921, just a few years after it opened, DuPont decided to close the dynamite plant. This meant that all the workers who had moved to Ramsay for their jobs unfortunately lost them. The closure changed the community significantly.
